I am hoping that you recognize our first reading, the Ten Commandments. It is bread and butter
religion, so basic as almost to be assumed. Yes, you need to hear them first at some time in your
life, but then they become so familiar, so second nature, so central.
But if you look at the order of service, you might note an odd detail. The citation is to Exodus
20:1-4, 7-9, 12-20. We skipped a bit. And when the lectionary skips something, it is usually for
one of two reasons. First, it is something terribly boring, like seventeen generations of names that
you do not recognize and likely could not pronounce. We glide past Methuselah and Enoch and
get to the good stuff.
