Taizé

On an occasional basis, we join together in the sanctuary for Taizé, an ecumenical,
participatory, contemplative prayer service of song and silence.

Holiday Services

First Church holds several special services throughout the year. On Christmas Eve at
4:30 p.m. there is a family service with Christmas carols, a Christmas story and candle
lighting. The later service at 8:00 p.m. is a communion service. Communion services
are also held for All Souls Sunday, Holy Thursday, and Pentecost. On Easter
Sunday, we gather for an Easter breakfast at 9:00 a.m. followed by a family service at
10:30 a.m.
The last Sunday of the regular church year, typically the second Sunday in June, is the
day of the annual church picnic beginning after the service. There are also periodic
evening services, such as Taizé style musical services, throughout the year.

Summer Services

Services during the summer are generally held in the Parish Hall of the church at 9:00
a.m. It is a shorter format and dress is casual. There is also no child care or Sunday
School during the summer months. Summer services generally begin on the third
Sunday in June and end on the last weekend in July. There are no Sunday services on
the Sunday nearest the Fourth of July or throughout August. Regular services resume
the first Sunday after the Labor Day weekend.

Weddings and Memorial Services at First Church

Weddings, memorial services, and any special services at First Church may be
coordinated with the Minister, including by non-members. Charges vary depending on
the proposed service, but generally include fees for the Minister, organist, and sexton as
well as for use of the church. All services are conducted by the First Church minister. A
signed “Use of Church” form is necessary to secure a date on the church calendar.
Special note: those considering a service in the fall should bear in mind that street
parking in the neighborhood is not permitted during Boston College home football games,
and the church otherwise has very limited parking. If a service would fall on an
applicable Saturday, the couple or family would need to obtain a police detail from the
City of Newton to coordinate parking and traffic. For details about arranging a
service, please contact the minister at 617-566-6237.
